Electric bikes, also known as e-bikes (electrically assisted bicycles), have grown in popularity in recent years. They offer an eco-friendly and practical solution for getting around town, exploring the countryside, or simply enjoying a relaxing, hassle-free ride. While prices have also dropped considerably, purchasing an e-bike remains a significant investment. So, the question many people are asking is: How can you choose the right e-bike? Let's explore the important points to consider.

Define Intended Use

The first thing to consider is, of course, your intended use for your e-bike. E-bikes are available in a variety of styles designed for different activities, including urban riding, off-roading, trekking, mountain biking, and more. If you primarily plan to use your e-bike for daily city commuting, a city bike model with a comfortable frame and a good battery capacity is ideal. A folding model may also be worth considering if you want to be able to take it to the office, or even to your apartment. However, if you plan to go on long rides in the countryside or forest, optimize your adventures with an electric mountain bike, which is much more appropriate. The mountain bike remains a classic of the genre, able to go anywhere, and this hasn't changed in its electric version :) The mountain bike remains a great classic, even in electric form!Choosing the Right Motor Type

Electric bikes are equipped with different types of motors, generally located in the front hub, the rear hub, or at the bottom bracket. The choice of motor will largely depend on your riding style and preferences.

The motor is often hidden in the rear hub.

Hub motors are ideal for smooth, constant assistance, while mid-drive motors offer a more natural riding experience, better simulating human effort. Rear hub motors are often preferred for their additional traction when climbing.

Also, be sure to check the motor manufacturer. A Bosch motor, for example, is a guarantee of quality.

Consider Battery Range

Battery range is a crucial factor when choosing an e-bike. It determines the distance you can travel on a single charge. For typical urban commutes, a battery with a range of 40 to 80 kilometers may be sufficient. However, if you plan to take longer trips, look for a model with a larger battery capacity. Keep in mind that actual range depends on many factors, including terrain, speed, rider weight, and the selected assistance level. The larger the Wh or Ah indicator, the better the range. Likewise, choose 48V batteries, which support higher speeds and a better range. While lithium batteries are now widely used in e-bikes, make sure you use the correct battery type. Lithium batteries have a much longer lifespan (1200 cycles), recharge faster, and are lighter. However, they cost a little more.

Some bike models allow you to add a secondary battery to increase range. This is also an interesting option.

This battery already weighs 6kg on its own. Fortunately, it can be removed in 1 minute.

Here too, don't hesitate to ask for the name of the battery or cell manufacturer: Bosch, Panasonic, LG, for example, are well-known manufacturers.

Evaluate the weight and size of the bike

The weight and size of the bike are important considerations, especially if you plan to transport your e-bike or store it in a limited space. Electric bikes tend to be heavier than traditional bikes due to the battery and motor, so make sure you can easily lift and maneuver the bike. Many models allow for easy battery removal, so if necessary, removing the battery can reduce the weight of the bike by 5-6 kg.

Test the Bike

Nothing beats a field test to assess the comfort, handling, and performance of an e-bike. Many bike shops offer free test rides. Take advantage of this opportunity to get a feel for the ride, test the different assistance levels, and see if the bike meets your expectations. Check the technical specifications

When reviewing the technical specifications of an e-bike, be sure to check the quality of components such as brakes, drivetrain, tires, and suspension (if the model is equipped with them). Choose quality components for optimal durability and safety. Although such a bike may be electric, most still use the same features as conventional bicycles.

Budget and additional options

Budget plays a key role in choosing your e-bike. Prices vary considerably depending on the brand, model, and features. It's essential to find a balance between your needs, preferences, and budget. Also, don't hesitate to explore additional options such as racks, mudguards, integrated lights, locks, and comfort accessories that can enhance your riding experience.

A basket is always practical for carrying belongings around town.

Don't hesitate to consult the government website to check for available subsidies. Electric bikes are a means of transportation that the government favors; it's therefore possible to obtain a bonus of up to €400 on an e-bike.

Conclusion

Choosing an e-bike involves considering the intended use, motor type, battery range, weight and size of the bike, technical specifications, budget, and possible options. The ideal, of course, is to be able to test it to truly appreciate its comfort and handling. With these elements in mind, you'll be better prepared to find the perfect e-bike that meets your needs and desires. Once you've made your choice, you can enjoy the excitement and freedom that riding an electric bike offers. Happy riding!
