As it does every year, connected health specialist Withings took advantage of CES 2023 to present its new innovation: Withings U-Scan. After four years of research and development, Withings has developed a veritable miniaturized health laboratory that can be hygienically placed in any toilet to access health data present in daily urine. This innovation was recognized by the Consumer Technology Association as a CES 2023 Innovation Award winner in three categories: Smart Home, Fitness & Sports, and Digital Health! With more than 3,000 metabolites, urine is an extraordinary indicator for health assessment and monitoring. It provides immediate insight into each individual's metabolism and is an integral part of tracking and detecting a wealth of information about their health. While humans urinate an average of seven times a day, urine tests are generally only performed once a year, in a laboratory. Withings U-Scan aims to democratize this by allowing users to perform biomarker analyses in the comfort and privacy of their own home.
A true revolution in daily health monitoring, Withings U-Scan is designed as a modular platform consisting of a pebble-shaped reader with interchangeable analysis cartridges that assess specific biomarkers without the need for sample collection or handling urine strips. Through automatic synchronization with the Health Mate app, it provides a wealth of actionable information based on a daily measurement.
Withings U-Scan:

How does it work? Easy to use, Withings U-Scan overcomes a myriad of technical and chemical challenges. Developed with experts in in vitro diagnostics as well as doctors specializing in urology, nephrology and gynecology, it required four years of research and development and resulted in the submission of 13 patent families. As a complete system, U-Scan performs three major actions:1)
Automated and simplified data capture using an advanced reader installed in the toilet
With a diameter of only 90 mm, the rechargeable U-Scan reader is designed to differentiate external liquid and urine in order to automatically collect samples for analysis. Urine flows to a collection point thanks to its patented pebble-shaped design. A pump is activated when the thermal sensor detects the presence of urine, which begins fluidic delivery of a sample through a microfluidic circuit. After collection, the urine sample is injected into a testing capsule where the chemical reaction is read by an optical sensor. At the end of each measurement, the circuit returns to the initial position and the remaining liquid is purged. The system is then automatically cleaned with each flush.
U-Scan identifies its user thanks to its Stream ID function. Low-energy radar sensors embedded in the reader measure multiple variables to identify an individual's unique urine stream signature, detecting its speed, distance and dispersion. Credentials are confirmed in the app.

Biomarker analyzes
within aadapted miniaturized urine laboratory for each use case The cylindrical, rotating U-Scan cartridge is a tiny chemical evaluation chamber containing dozens of miniaturized test capsules providing reliable results. When the reader places the sample at the injection site, Withings U-Scan begins chemical analysis in just a few moments. It automatically transmits the results via Wi-Fi, then rotates the cartridge to expose the next test capsule at the injection site. Each cartridge is designed to deliver 3 months of measurements.
U-Scan will initially be available in Europe with two consumer cartridges:
U-Scan Cycle Sync
for tracking and synchronizing women's menstrual cycles (i.e., cycle syncing), and U-Scan Nutri Balance , a detailed metabolic guide on hydration and nutrition. The modular system is specifically designed to allow Withings to expand its future analysis of biomarkers associated with various medical and health conditions. Combined with measurements from the Withings ecosystem, U-Scan will deliver even more information to users and is an essential tool to help prevent disease and improve quality of life while reducing healthcare costs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiPwRh7Ot803)
Science-Based and Actionable Advice
The U-Scan Nutri Balance app will display specific gravity, pH, vitamin C, and ketone levels. It will help users monitor their metabolic intake to optimize their daily hydration and nutrients. In addition to displaying results such as energy metabolism and pH levels, it will recommend workouts, dietary information, and recipes to achieve identified goals.A solution for both individuals and professionals Withings Health Solutions, the B2B division of Withings serving the healthcare professional market, is making this technology available to them for research purposes. “U-Scan's ability to perform daily urine tests at home is fully aligned with WITHINGS' mission: to help users access an unprecedented level of health data through frequent measurements.

This is one of the most exciting and complex products we've ever announced. We're kicking off this revolution in health with U-Scan Cycle Sync and Nutri Balance. We look forward to announcing the new test cartridges and the new medical applications this unique technology will enable.”

Availabilityin the second quarter
Withings U-Scan will initially be available in Europe starting in the second quarter of 2023 with the Nutri Balance and Cycle Sync consumer cartridges. Users can purchase the U-Scan starter kit for €499.95 and receive a U-Scan reader and a cartridge covering 3 months of measurements; they can then subscribe to automatically receive a refill as soon as their cartridge runs out, or purchase a cartridge directly from the manufacturer's website. Future U-Scan medical cartridges will be available once regulatory approvals are validated in Europe.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Hsrh6TVWlU
