Segway unveils Navimow X3: the ultra-efficient robotic lawn mower that tames XXL gardens

I had the privilege of attending the launch event of the new Navimow X3 by Segway series in Chantilly this Tuesday. Designed for large spaces of up to 10,000 m², this new flagship from the Navimow range pushes the limits of what an autonomous robotic lawn mower can accomplish. Gone are the days when owners of large gardens had to settle for ineffective or time-consuming solutions. With the X3 series, Segway takes a bold step forward by offering a solution that combines cutting-edge technology, formidable efficiency, and ease of use.

EFLS 3.0: an ultra-precise positioning system that changes the game

The technological heart of the X3 series relies on the third generation of the Exact Fusion Location System (EFLS 3.0). This proprietary technology combines several approaches to ensure centimeter-accurate positioning: RTK (Real Time Kinematics), VSLAM (Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping), and VIO (Visual Inertial Odometry).

Simply put, this system allows the robot to know exactly where it is in your garden at all times, with surgical precision. Gone are the random paths often observed with traditional robotic lawn mowers! The Navimow X3 works methodically and systematically, ensuring complete coverage of your lawn with no missed areas.

One of the major advances of this version 3.0 is the improvement in RTK signal coverage from 20% to 30%. This means that the robot operates perfectly even in traditionally problematic areas, such as narrow passages or under trees. And for complex garden layouts (like a front and back yard), the system can be supplemented with an additional RTK antenna, ensuring optimal coverage across the entire property.

VisionFence: eyes to see and avoid obstacles

If EFLS 3.0 is the brain of the Navimow X3, VisionFence is its eyes. This obstacle avoidance technology has been significantly improved in this new series, with a field of view extended to 300° thanks to three cameras and a ToF (Time of Flight) sensor capable of detecting objects between 0.1 and 2 meters.

The robot can thus identify more than 200 different types of obstacles, from the most obvious (garden furniture, toys) to the more subtle (swings, trampolines, or hanging decorations). The built-in artificial intelligence analyzes these obstacles in real-time and plans optimal paths to navigate around them.

During the demonstration, Segway engineers scattered various obstacles along the course, and I was impressed to see the X3 avoid them gracefully, never stopping or hesitating. This fluid movement reflects remarkable technological maturity.

Unmatched mowing efficiency on the market

The X3 series is not only intelligent, but also incredibly efficient. According to Segway, its mowing efficiency is twice the market average. The X350 model, for instance, can cover an area of 5,000 m² in just 24 hours, a performance that has earned it the high mowing efficiency certification from TÜV Rheinland (a first for a robotic lawn mower!).

This exceptional efficiency is explained by several factors. First, the moving speed reaches 1 m/s on the high-end models. Next, the cutting width of 23.7 cm and the six blades mounted on an anti-jamming disk ensure a clean and consistent cut. Finally, the battery capacity (up to 12.8 Ah on the X390) and shorter charging times (from 60 to 100 minutes depending on the models) maximize effective mowing time.

To give you a concrete idea, the X390 can mow up to 1,200 m² on a single charge, with a runtime of 240 minutes. Enough to take care of the largest gardens in record time!

Simplified wireless installation

One of the historical strengths of the Navimow range is the absence of perimeter wire, and the X3 series takes this concept even further with an ultra-simplified installation. Thanks to AI Assist Mapping technology, the robot helps you map your garden and automatically optimizes its route.

The Navimow mobile app (available on iOS and Android) guides you step by step through this process. In just a few clicks, you can set the virtual boundaries of your lawn, create restricted areas (flower beds, vegetable gardens, etc.), and establish secure passages between different zones.

A particularly clever feature is the antenna locator, which analyzes the RTK positioning and signal strength to recommend the best locations for your charging station and antenna base. This optimization ensures reliable docking and reduces potential interference.

Completing the setup of an X350 in a medium-sized garden thus takes less than 45 minutes, from the initial start-up to the first mowing. This is impressive considering that setting up a traditional robotic lawn mower with perimeter wire can easily take an entire day!

Quiet and environmentally friendly operation

Despite its power, the X3 series remains surprisingly quiet, with a noise level of only 60 dB(A), equivalent to that of a household air conditioner and half that of a conventional gas lawn mower. Therefore, you can schedule nighttime mowings without worrying about waking your neighbors (or your children!).

This discretion comes with a total respect for the environment. 100% electric, the Navimow X3 emits no polluting gases, and its next-generation lithium-ion battery offers an optimized lifespan. An ecological choice that fits perfectly into a sustainable gardening approach.

I was particularly sensitive to this aspect during the demonstration: being able to have a normal conversation next to a robotic lawn mower in operation is quite a surreal experience when accustomed to the noise of gas mowers!

Safety and connectivity: the Navimow X3 at the forefront

Safety has not been overlooked in this new series. The X3 incorporates four advanced safety features, including zone exit alerts and lift detection. The integrated GPS tracking allows you to easily locate your mower via the app in case of theft, and discreet compartments even allow you to add your own additional tracking devices.

As for connectivity, the Navimow X3 fully integrates into your smart home with its compatibility with Alexa and Google Home. You can thus start, stop, or schedule a mowing simply by voice command. The mobile app offers complete control over your robot: mowing scheduling, cutting height adjustment (from 20 to 70 mm), real-time activity tracking, etc.

The models also include 4G connectivity (with 1 to 5 years of free subscription depending on the versions) which ensures that the robot remains connected even when your Wi-Fi network does not cover the entire garden. A dot matrix display completes the device for quick access to essential information directly on the machine.

An extension bay for limitless possibilities

One of the most promising innovations of the X3 series is its extension bay with an open API. This interface allows for the addition of extra accessories based on your specific needs, paving the way for a scalable ecosystem around your robotic lawn mower.

The first announced accessory is a trimmer that will offer semi-automatic edging for lawn borders, often neglected by conventional robotic lawn mowers. Other accessories are in development and are expected to be announced in the coming months.

This modular approach is particularly interesting for homeowners with large gardens who can customize their Navimow X3 according to their specific needs. One can imagine future modules for soil analysis, targeted irrigation, or even pest detection. The possibilities are endless!

Navimow X3: a complete range to meet all needs

The Navimow X3 series is available in four distinct models to suit different garden sizes: the X315 for areas up to 1,500 m², the X330 for 3,000 m², the X350 for 5,000 m², and the X390, a real workhorse, capable of handling up to 10,000 m² (equivalent to one and a half football fields!). All share the same technological DNA, but differ in battery capacity and runtime.

During the presentation in Chantilly, I was particularly impressed by the robustness of these machines. With their impressive dimensions (698 × 550 × 307 mm) and a weight of around 20 kg, these robots inspire confidence at first glance. But do not be fooled: despite their size, they move with surprising agility and can climb slopes of up to 50% (or 27°), a rare performance in the market.

My opinion after this presentation in Chantilly

After spending several hours observing the Navimow X3 series during this event in Chantilly, I must admit that I am impressed. Segway has successfully created a robotic lawn mower that combines intelligence, power, and ease of use, all without compromising on mowing quality. I will soon return in more detail about the possibilities of this robot, as tests have already begun in my garden :)

The pricing is quite premium, but on par with the market for models capable of managing such areas.

For homeowners with large gardens who previously spent hours on their riding mowers each week, the Navimow X3 represents a true liberation. Imagine reclaiming all that time to actually enjoy your garden instead of maintaining it! And for property managers (hotels, golf courses, communities), it’s a solution that could revolutionize their approach to managing green spaces.

The X3 series will be available at authorized Segway Navimow dealers. Pre-orders are expected to open in the coming weeks for delivery scheduled before the summer of 2025, just in time for the full mowing season. Perfect timing for those considering equipping themselves this year!

With this X3 series, Segway confirms its position as an innovative leader in the wireless robotic lawn mower market. Just three years after the launch of its first robotic mower, the brand has successfully leveraged its experience and feedback from its 170,000 users to create a product that perfectly meets the expectations of owners of large green spaces. A remarkable technological success that deserves our full attention!
